Freshwater Love™ began with a simple question from my 5-year-old son.
One day, while sitting together with my wife and son during an arts-and-crafts project, he asked us what kind of place he lived in. At first, the question seemed simple. But as I began trying to explain Michigan through my own eyes, I realized I was describing much more than a place on a map.
Like many people who grow up here, I was taught to use my hand as a mitten whenever someone asked where I was from. It’s a tradition that generations of Michiganders instantly recognize. The mitten isn’t just geography—it represents home, identity, and a shared connection to the place we love.
As we continued talking, I found myself describing the things that had always defined Michigan for me: the Great Lakes and freshwater coastlines, forests and beaches, towering sand dunes, orchards and vineyards, cherry season, golf courses, small towns, family traditions, and the countless adventures that come with growing up surrounded by nature.
What surprised me most was that I had never fully connected those pieces myself.
I had spent my entire life appreciating Michigan’s lakes, forests, outdoor traditions, changing seasons, and close-knit communities, but I had never found a way to bring them together into one story. Sitting there with my wife and son allowed me to see Michigan differently.
For the first time, I wasn’t simply describing where we lived—I was describing why Michigan felt like home.
The more I reflected on it, the more I realized that feeling isn’t limited to the people who were born here. Every year, families travel to Michigan to reconnect with loved ones, spend time on the lakes, climb the dunes, visit orchards and vineyards, play a round of golf, explore small towns, and create traditions of their own.
Somewhere along the way, many of them begin calling this place “home” in their hearts, too.
That conversation eventually became the inspiration for Freshwater Love™.
What began as an attempt to answer my son’s question became a way to tell two stories at once—the story of Michigan as I had always known it, and the story of the family that inspired me to see it more clearly.
The Story Behind the Logo
Every element in our logo tells part of that story.
The iconic Michigan mitten and Upper Peninsula represent the place we proudly call home. The freshwater waves symbolize the Great Lakes that shape our state and connect the communities that surround them. The rising sun represents new beginnings, new adventures, and the opportunity each day brings.
While every element celebrates Michigan, a few details carry a more personal meaning for our family.
The three pine trees symbolize my three children, reminding me that, like the forests that define our state, the strongest roots are built through love, family, and the experiences we share together.
The five birds overhead represent our family of five—always together on life’s journey and always finding our way home.
Most people will simply see a beautiful Michigan landscape, and that’s exactly what I hoped for. But for our family, those small details quietly tell the story of why Freshwater Love™ began in the first place.
Together, these elements reflect what has always made Michigan special to me: family, friendship, freshwater, forests, adventure, community, gratitude, and the memories created in the places we love.
What Freshwater Love™ Means
As I continued reflecting on what Michigan truly meant to me, I realized it wasn’t just the places that shaped us—it was the experiences we shared there.
Some of our favorite memories didn’t come from perfect days. They came from unexpected setbacks, changing weather, wrong turns, and the moments that somehow brought family and friends even closer together.
Those are the stories we still laugh about years later.
Those are the memories that stay with us.
Freshwater Love™ is a reminder that the places we love often become the backdrop for the people we love most. Life isn’t memorable because everything went perfectly. It’s memorable because of who was beside us when it didn’t.
To me, Michigan has always been more than a place. It’s where memories are made, traditions are passed from one generation to the next, and ordinary moments quietly become lifelong stories.
Those stories can begin almost anywhere.
They’re made on summer afternoons along the Great Lakes and mornings spent walking a quiet beach. They’re made climbing sand dunes, boating and fishing, hiking through forests, sitting around a campfire, crossing the Mackinac Bridge, spending a summer day on Mackinac Island, or watching the sun disappear over the water.
They’re made during a round of golf with family or friends, walking through a vineyard, visiting a roadside farm market, picking cherries during the summer harvest, exploring an orchard in the fall, or discovering a Michigan small town for the first time.
Sometimes they’re as simple as returning to the same family cottage every summer, taking the same road north, or stopping at a place you’ve visited so many times that arriving there feels a little like coming home.
That is the Michigan Freshwater Love™ was created to celebrate.
Freshwater Love™ is a Michigan-born, family-owned brand inspired by the place we call home—and by the memories it has helped create for generations of people who have come to love it, too.
It was created to celebrate the beauty, culture, traditions, and spirit of Michigan.
It’s for the people who point to their hand when someone asks where they’re from.
It’s for those who grew up swimming in the Great Lakes, exploring forests, climbing sand dunes, gathering around campfires, boating, fishing, hiking, golfing on a summer morning, wandering through vineyards and orchards, celebrating cherry season, chasing sunsets along the shoreline, and creating memories that continue to bring them back home.
But you don’t have to be born in Michigan to understand what makes this place special.
Freshwater Love™ is also for the families who return every summer, the weekend adventurers, and the visitors who came here once and discovered a place they couldn’t wait to experience again.
Because sometimes the places that leave the biggest mark on our hearts aren’t the places we were born—they’re the places we can’t wait to return to.
Most of all, Freshwater Love™ is a reminder that sometimes the simplest questions help us discover the stories that have been with us all along.
In many ways, Freshwater Love™ became the answer to a 5-year-old’s question—and the realization that the story of Michigan had been living in my heart long before I ever knew how to explain it.
I hope every time you wear Freshwater Love™, you’re reminded of a place, a memory, or the people who make Michigan feel like home.
Whether you grew up here, spent summers at the family cottage, discovered Michigan on vacation, or simply found yourself returning year after year, I hope our apparel reminds you why this place means so much—and maybe even becomes part of the memories you create next.
